## Hectare

What is “hectare“?

To answer this question we should first visualize the term of “are”.

In 1795, when the metric system was introduced, the “are” was defined as 100 square metres.

In 1960, the metric system was further rationalized and the International System of Units (SI) appeared. The “are was excluded from being a recognized unit, however, the hectare was not.

Hectare is a unit that is used to measure the area of surface, or land. One hectare equals 100 ares.

To make it easier for you to visualize the size of hectare, we present the following examples:

The Apple Bowl in Kelowna for instance is a 400 m running track and the grassy area inside is 1.12 hectares. Also, most sports fields are one hectare in size.

Hectare equals the following units:

1 hectare  = 2.471 acres.

1 hectare  = 100 ares

1 hectare  = 1,000 deciare

1 hectare  = 10,000 centiare

1 hectare = 10,000 square meters.

Note that the centiare is one square metre while the deciare is ten square metres.
